Finally answered: MHT-CET 2012 or single national medical entrance exam(single CET)?

Medical Council of India(MCI) has finalized the syllabus of Std. XI and Std. XII for NEET MBBS entrance exam. NEET is the proposed replacement for all state-level medical(MBBS) entrance examinations such as MHT-CET, K-CET, GUJ-CET, G-CET, etc. The syllabus has been outlined by NCERT and a copy of it can be downloaded from here.

Comparing the syllabus as outlined in the MCI-NCERT draft with the newly published textbook of Std. XI of Maharashtra State Board, one will find that not only all topics of core syllabus have been covered in the new textbook, but even additional topics have been covered. Thus it appears that all state boards have an obligation to comply with the core syllabus but at the same time have freedom to extend it as per their discretion. That is, the state board exams will be based on the entire textbook but NEET will be based only on the core syllabus.

However, the syllabus of the XII of Maharashtra is not as per the guidelines. Since the current academic year has already started, the syllabus cannot be implemented this year. To confirm this, the Maharashtra State Board has already clarified on its official website that the new core syllabus will be effective for Std. XII from academic year 2012 – 2013 only, and not 2011 – 2012.

Bottom line is that students appearing for CET in 2012 should leave all worries about whether there will be MHT-CET or single national CET in 2012. MHT-CET will be there in 2012.

A leading newspaper reported that MCI is going to conduct the NEET exam in May 2012. It should be noted that this reference is made to the NEET exam of post-graduate courses(MD or MS) and not under-graduate or UG courses such as MBBS. NEET(UG) will come from 2013 only.

It however remains unanswered whether admissions to other health science courses such as dental, ayurved, homeopath, physiotherapy, etc. will be based on which exam.

Why MCQs in MHT-CET are always differently styled than what we solve in popular books

When we were analyzing the MHT-CET 2009 and 2010 biology memory based question paper, we came across a lot of interesting observations. In our opinions, these observations say a lot of things about the mindset of the paper-setters who are involved in the paper-creation process. Before I get into the details of those observation, let me first give a background info on how the paper-setting is done.

The paper-setting is done at the office of DMER, located just outside CST Mumbai, in St. George Hospital Campus. The process starts around the end of February and is completed within few days to weeks.

  1. DMER requests the State Board to send a copy of the syllabus and list of prescribed textbooks(sanctioned textbooks + textbooks published by the Board itself).
  2. DMER purchases the latest revised versions of the textbooks as suggested by the Board. It is not necessary that DMER purchases all the suggested textbooks. It may simply choose a few textbooks by its own. Also it is not necessary that DMER should purchase the state board textbook. It can choose to purchase all other suggested textbooks except the ones published by state board.
  3. After choosing their textbooks, DMER appoints senior teching faculties from Junior colleges as paper-setters. It is important to note that only junior college faculty members are invited for paper-setting. Many carry a notion that since it is a medical entrance exam, doctors from medical colleges are called for paper-setting – which is wrong.
  4. The paper-setters are not allowed to carry any book or chit along with them such as Target, Uttam, Himalaya, Vidyabhartee, etc. The questions are compulsorily to be framed by referring the textbooks.
  5. The paper-setters mutually divide themselves amongs groups for particular chapters or their area of interest. It is not necessary that any paper-setter should create and submit MCQs from all the chapters of paper-I or paper-II. A paper setter may choose to submit questions for only one or few of the chapters.
  6. Also, the paper setter cannot insist on using any particular textbook of his preference. If DMER has not purchased that textbook, the paper-setter cannot argue and force DMER to get that textbook.
  7. Paper-setters are instructed to create more than the no. of MCQs actually required. For example: If Biology question paper is to contain 100 MCQs, they are instructed to create more than 100 MCQs because some questions may be eliminated in the scrutiny process.
  8. After all the paper-setters have submitted their MCQs, the MCQs are subjected to three levels of scrutiny by other paper-setters. In the scrutiny process, the paper-setters will verify that the MCQs is a valid one – that is – it does not contain errors, answer is found in sanctioned textbooks, and that answers mentioned in all the sanctioned textbooks are same(especially for number based MCQs)
  9. Along with such manual paper-setting process, DMER may also be maintaining a computerized question-bank. Thus, it is possible that some of the questions finally included in the questions paper are from the question bank, and the manually created MCQs by paper-setters are used to replenish the question-bank.
  10. Once the MCQ paper is finalized, four versions(11,22,33,44) are created by frame-shifting or block-shifting. Note than none of the paper-setter gets to see the final question paper since the MCQs are already well-scrutinized before including them in the process.

Now coming to our interesting observations and conclusions:

  1. Their way of sentence formation is much different from what is found in popular MCQ books like Target, Uttam, etc,. Why? This is because they do not have exposure to these books. Most of these senior-faculty members are not associated with any coaching classes. Therefore, they do not adopt the same MCQ study material as students do.
  2. MCQs are detail-oriented, and not just superficial. For example: In the past, they had asked about the part of Brassica plant in which Hirudin accumulates. While most of the practice books dwell only upto the fact that GMO Brassica is used for hirudin production, their MCQs was one-step-further.
  3. MCQs are process-oriented. For instance, while MCQs found in common study material deal with conclusions of experiments and their applications, MCQs asked in MHT-CET have many times dealt with the procedure along with the conclusion, and not conclusion alone.

There are ten biology text-books for MHT-CET 2011, and not just the one by state board

This post is to clarify that there are ten textbooks for the subject of Std. 12 Biology – in H.S.C. 2011 and MHT-CET 2011, and not just one textbook. The Maharashtra State Board has published its own Std. 12 Biology textbook in May 2010. Since then, there is a constant flow of rumors and misguidance among students that the sanction of the nine std. 12 biology textbooks by private publishers has been revoked, and that there is only one Std. 12 biology textbook – that published the Board.

The Board has long back circulated an notification among all science junior colleges that the nine sanctioned textbooks of Std. 12 biology by private publishers will  retain their sanction for the current academic year. Students may contact their college teachers to see a copy of the circular themselves. As the circular is considered as confidential, we cannot put a scanned copy of it on our wesbite. But you can get a copy from your college teachers.

There have been incidents where certain teachers have been spreading these ‘news’ but the study material of their private tuitions does span over all the ten textbooks. Thus, these teachers are asking their private tuition students to study from all the ten textbooks, but at the same time, they are spreading rumors that there are not ten but only one textbook for Biology. Students, parents and educators who are victims of such rumors and misguidance are therefore made aware of the possibility that these rumors may have been created and propagated by certain entities with vested interests and malicious intentions.

All junior colleges(science) have been given the circular by the board regarding the validity of sanctioned textbooks. Therefore, if your college teacher also looks ‘confused’ about this matter, please point him/her towards this circular.

There also have been incidents where senior college teachers are telling the students that “I am a paper-setter for CET 2011 and we will be using only Board textbook”. Students should note that the process of setting the question papers for MHT-CET 2011 has not yet started as the time of writing this article, therefore anybody claiming to be in the paper-setting committee is lying. Students may report such incidents directly to the DMER.

Students of PCB group who must also read the other nine textbooks of the private publishers, but have not yet started reading those due to this rumor or confusion should consider Prof. ROHAN SHENOY’s test-series for MHT-CET Biology – 2011 because all our study material is prepared not only by referring to the nine sanctioned textbooks but also updated to comply with the new textbook published by the State Board. For details of the MHT-CET Biology test-series from all ten textbooks, please click here.

Corrections in Std. 12 biology textbook of state board(government textbook) – Sep 2010

In July 2010, the Maharashtra State Board published its first Biology textbook for Std. 12. However, there are some corrections in it, which have been identified and corrected by the Board. Click here to download the PDF file containing the corrections.

In Jan 2008, the board had issued few corrections in relation to mistakes and content of textbooks from private publishers. If any of use is using the old uncorrected copies of those textbooks, please download this PDF file also.

MHT-CET 2009 question paper (memory based)

We will be posting the memory based question paper soon of MHT-CET 2009 Biology. Our students have been able to recollect about 90 out of 100 MCQs asked in MHT-CET 2009 biology.

Update: The memory based question paper has been uploaded and is available for download to only those students who have joined our test-series. It is not be available for other students.

MHT-CET paper pattern

The MHT-CET for health science courses consists of 200 MCQs – all of them being compulsory. The three subjects – physics, chemistry and biology constitute 50, 50 and 100 MCQs respectively. Each MCQ is worth 1 mark. There is no negative marking for incorrect answers or partial credit for partially correct answer.

For biology, all the MCQs are asked from the 9 sanctioned textbooks only. No MCQs that are beyond the 9 sanctioned textbooks are asked. MCQs are not lifted from CBSE/ICSE/NCERT/etc. books if they are not covered in our syllabus. Chapterwise, the constitution is fluid to some extent. The exact contribution of each chapter may not be known because MHT-CET question papers are not allowed to be taken out of the examination hall. The question papers have to be submitted back to the supervisor. The only information this is available is memory-based information from students who appeared at the exam, which may not be accurate.

Chapter-wise MCQ contribution:

  1. Natural resources and conservation— 4 MCQs
  2. Biotechnology— 9 MCQs
  3. Biofertlizers and medicinal plants— 8 MCQs
  4. Plant water relations— 3 MCQs
  5. Photosynthesis— 5 MCQs

MHT-CET : Study tips

For Jr. College (science) students, it hardly matters whether you aspire to be a doctor or an engineer because most of you would have to appear for the MHT-CET, either medical or engineering or both!

In any case, the roots of CET are same: Knowledge and its rapid application. Both of these come by sheer hard-work and practice. However, due to the memory-dominated S.S.C. examination system, many students continue with memory-based learning. Memory dominated learning can help you at H.S.C. exam too but its a big flop at MHT-CET! All questions in MHT-CET are multiple choice with only one best answer type(M.C.Q.s). For assessing a student’s overall understanding and application skills, M.C.Q.s are usually considered superior to essay type answer. Hence, it is important that students start developing these skills from Std. XI instead of depending upon coaching classes or tuition. If you haven’t, then it is high time you should take it seriously now.

Giving yourself the strong foundation for MHT-CET: step-by-step

Most students will have difficulty adapting themselves to the CET way of learning. To be comfortable with CET, the your first priority should be to be comfortable with your H.S.C. syllabus. You should know ‘each and everything about every topic within the scope of your syllabus’. In CET, there are very few questions that can be predicted as ‘most likely’ as in H.S.C. board exams. Questions can appear from any part of sanctioned textbooks. Hence, apart from concepts, a student must be well-versed with factual data such as name of scientists, years of discoveries, ‘Father of’ various branches(Ex: Father of Genetics is Johann Mendel), other numerical data, etc.

Biology:

The factual data, for atleast the subject of Biology, which is dispersed over 9 sanctioned textbooks is so great in size that it would be impossible to study them in an unorganized way. Always, read a chapter from one sanctioned textbook and read the same chapter from another textbook. Once you finish reading the chapter from all 9 sanctioned textbooks, then repeat the same process with the next chapter. Underline facts that you find are anot given in every textbooks. For eg: In the topic ‘Immunity system‘, only one book mentions that ‘IgM class antibody is the earliest antibody produced by the embryo, when it is about 20 weeks old‘. Capture that unique points by underlining them. Avoid using fluorescent markers because they are more time-consuming and can fade with time. Best is a pencil.

Physics:

Most students already have experienced the nightmare with physics. Physics is a concept-dominated subject. At CET, if you are not well-versed with the concept, in a way, you are actually preparing to lose. A ‘concept’ cannot be always taught in a classroom. The understanding that some students pick from the teacher’s words is a ‘concept’ while other pick it up as merely as a ‘set of words and sentences that should be mugged and written in the exam’. Remember, concept is not the words, it is the logic that you realize between events that are described by your teacher. Good teachers will make you understand the logic too, but if you don’t have a good teacher, you will have a tough time at physics.

Problem solving(numerical problems) is a great way to ensure high score in physics. Every year, atleast 42 out of 50 MCQs in physics are numericals. The average amount of time you have to solve each question is just 54 seconds. Within 54 secs, you have to read, understand and interpret the problem statement. The answer calculation begins after that. It is IMPOSSIBLE to complete physics MCQs without diligent practice or MCQs of varied types. Most students practice but they stick to only a few types of MCQs instead of adventuring into more types. This directly hampers your chances of success at MHT-CET because the MCQs in MHT-CET are not strictly based upon any prototype as found in various MCQs practice books. Many MCQs are much more creative than those often found in various reference books. Hence, practice as many varied types as possible. Author P.S. Bangui’s numerical problem book is a must-have. Also remember to solve numerical problems given in the ‘exercise’ at the end of every chapter. Bangui’s book too comes with its drawbacks.

Chemistry:

Chemistry is considered to be much easier than physics but still it is not as luxurious as biology in terms of level of difficulty and availability of time. Chemistry I demands theory and numerical problem practice where as chemistry II demands more of ‘reactions’ practice. While many reactions seem logical and easy to understand, it is most important that you remember ALL of them in your CET. Minute differences between reactions are very important which are not often discussed in H.S.C.

Best luck for your CET!
