Should you share your knowledge ?

When you learn new things for MHT-CET, you will tend to guard that as a top secret. You shall not others even sense that you know something better. If others ask you which books you refer, you won’t tell them but tell them names of some other books. Right? This is thoroughly human tendency. It is very natural to be so possessive about your medical seat in an era where over a lakh students are competing for just few thousand seats.

Then why should one share? Doesn’t that make your competition more tough? Yes, or No, depends upon the person with whom you are sharing your knowledge. At this point instead of using the word ‘share’, we should use the word ‘Trade’. Don’t share, but trade your knowledge with the knowledgeable! Let there be equal give and take of knowledge. If you explain a physics problem to your friend, he is bound to return that in some way or the other, may be as a solution to some P/C/B problem that is troubling you! In this process, neither you nor your friend have lost anything but gained a lot. And what you have gained is much more valuable than what you think you may have lost. So how to trade is the question, or more importantly, with whom to trade.

The outline of the entire process is simple:

  • Make yourself good at the subject. This is the most important prerequisite. After all, nobody trades with a beggar. Correct?
  • Spot a knowledgeable, intelligent, hard-working colleague who is willing to exchange knowledge.
  • Establish a knowledge trade group or in other words, a study group.

Making yourself better at the subjects:
The title is self explanatory and am I not going to tell you any extra-ordinary thing. You must study hard, not waste your time, give up laziness, etc. There are no substitutes for hardwork and valuable time and you must put in efforts if you want to succeed. It will be difficult for you to master a the subject in a day. Go slow, chapter by chapter and when you are confident about atleast 40% of the syllabus, go ahead with the plan.

Spotting the right person to share:
This is the most important step and also the one which often goes wrong. They are unable to spot the right candidate. Some of the successfully tested methods to spot the right candidate are:
Method 1: In a classroom, when a teacher asks some question and you know the answer,do not answer. Resist your temptation and give others a chance to answer. Somebody will atleast make an attempt to answer the question and if he/she is consistent in making attempts and scoring the answer, then he/she is the right person to share. Limitations: You may fail to spot people who have reserved attitude. They may be extremely confident about the answer but won’t answer at all. So what? I have another method.

Method 2: Hang out in your college library, and notice students who spend long hours in library(of course studying and not sleeping!). Just observe which books they are busy with. But remember to do all this without irritating them or invading their privacy or in any other objectionable way.Just go to them asking for help for some numerical or other question. Even if they don’t get the answer exactly correct, if he/she has made an commendable or a praise-worthy effort, he/she is the right candidate! Limitations: May be time consuming.

In the course of time, you will discover many other methods and may even devise one of your own!

Make a knowledge trade group:
The concept of study group is very old. But the study group you establish on my guidelines will be more effective in many cases. How many times has your present group gathered for study but ended in time pass or chit-chat? The key to success of a study group is that every member must be equally hard-working, intelligent and focused. Even if one member is distracted, chances are high that he will distract others too. So make a group of students who are focused and less prone to distractions. While adding new students to the group, be strict about the group policy that only hard-working and focused individuals will be allowed to join the group. However, if somebody who is not as good as you in studies asks for help, remember to help him/her. But that does mean you make them a group member. If you make them a group member, your study group will become a tuition group! (I am not against helping somebody but I firmly believe that what people can do for themselves, you should not do for them for a long time. Besides,You have your own studies. Give them a hint and let them solve the rest puzzle themselves.

Wish you best luck!
